Octave of easter1/8/2024 ![]() Peter proceeded to speak and said: “You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. Cornelius was an officer in the Roman legions, not even a proselyte but nevertheless “a devout man, who feared God with all his household, gave alms liberally to the people, and prayed constantly to God” ( Acts 10:2). The 1 st Reading of the Mass of the Day is an account of Peter’s discourse to Cornelius, a pious centurion in Caesarea Maritima, the other Caesarea, which Herod the Great had built on the Mediterranean coast of Palestine. For those of us who have been praying intensely for the resolution of the war in the Ukraine, an end to the Corona Pandemic, and (in the Philippines) for peaceful and honest elections, the expression newness of life acquires special significance. During the Easter Season-that lasts until Pentecost Sunday, which this year falls on June 5-we resurrect with him to the newness of life. During Holy Week we accompanied our Lord closely in his last days on earth, dying to ourselves by uniting ourselves to his self-immolation on Good Friday. In Lent we prepared to die to our old selves through prayer, penance, and good works. And so, now that our Lenten observance is concluded, let us renew the promises of Holy Baptism by which we once renounced Satan and his works and promised to serve God in the holy Catholic Church. After the homily in Easter Sunday Masses that are celebrated with a congregation, the rite of the renewal of baptismal promises may be repeated, introduced by the following words of the Celebrant:ĭear Brothers and sisters, through the paschal mystery we have been buried with Christ in Baptism so that we may walk with him in newness of life. Thus, the whole Church sings in the entrance antiphon of the Day Mass-which is distinct from the Vigil Mass and the Dawn Mass-of the Resurrection of the Lord. To him be glory and power for all the ages of eternity, Alleluia, Alleluia!
